Relations
The measure of Excellence Awards competition is sponsored annually by VSHMPR to recognize outstanding achievements in healthcare marketing, public relations, communication and community relations.
Award winners will be announced at the VSHMPR Spring Educational Conference May 8-10, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Reston during the annual Measure of Excellence Awards Banquet.
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Measure of Excellence Awards competition is open to both VSHMPR members and non-members. The entry fee for active VSHMPR members in good standing (must have paid dues) is $50, while the entry fee for non-members is $100 per entry (depending on how many entries you have, joining VSHMPR may be the smarter option!) to be considered, entries must meet the following criteria:
- Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.
- Entries may be submitted in multiple categories.
- Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form and a one page description.
- An entry fee must be paid for each entry. Please send one check for total of all entries.
- *PLEASE NOTE* All entries must be submitted electronically either via email or on a CD

Checks should be made payable to Virginia Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public relations (VSHMPR) and mailed with entries. Entry fees are used to defray the costs of the competition and awards program.
DEADLINE
All entries must be received by March 27, 2013.

Entries will be displayed at the 2011 Spring Conference, and may be picked up after the awards ceremony or during the remainder of the conference. Those not claimed will be discarded.
CATEGORIES
- Internal Publication
Newsletters, magazine written for employees, physicians, patients volunteers, etc.
- External Publication
A publication issued and written for audiences outside the facility.
- Writing
May include single article, release, speech, script, op-ed, or position paper. Writing must be produced only by the entrant or members of the entering staff (may NOT include freelance or paid agencies). Writing printed by newspaper or magazine reporters, even though generated by staff efforts, is not eligible. You need not include information on results or total cost in the entry details.
- Crisis Communications
Projects designed to meet critical communications needs to any audience during or immediately after a crisis situation. (e.g. major accident, natural disaster, investigation, labor dispute, medical emergency, etc.)
- Public Relations Event/Project
Special one time event/ project, designed to address specific audiences using multiple tools of communication. Submit public service announcements in this category.
- Advertising/Marketing Campaign
Any paid advertising campaign involving a series of ads or two or more forms of advertising.
- Print Advertising
Only one single print ad may be submitted per entry. If you produced a series of print ads for the same campaign and would like to submit all of them, you may do so as a separate entry for each. Advertising Campaign may be a more appropriate category.
- Television Advertising
Only one single TV as may be submitted per entry. If you produced a series of TV ads for the same campaign and would like to submit all of them, you may do so as a separate entry for each. Advertising Campaign may be a more appropriate category.
- Radio Advertising
Only one single radio ad may be submitted per entry. If you produced a series of radio ads for the same campaign and would like to submit all of them, you may do so as a separate entry for each. Advertising Campaign may be a more appropriate category.
- Outdoor Advertising
Submit color image of creative (either output of artwork or photograph of actual medium.)
- Community Partnerships
Programs designed to partner healthcare organizations with community groups or fund raising. Projects should illustrate benefit for both organizations. Include examples of PR and marketing materials used in the partnership and support documents.
- Multi-Media/ Interactive
Includes, video, film, DVD’s, kiosks, websites (including mobile), and social media.
- Potpourri *NEW*
Have a project or campaign that doesn’t fit in any of the above categories? Then submit your entry here.
FORMAT FOR PROJECT ENTRY
Each entry must be accompanied by:
• An entry form (see last page)
• A one page summary sheet (instructions on entry form)
The one page summary sheet is the main criterion used by the judges to determine winning entries.
*NEW* All entries must be submitted either electronically (via email) or MUST be mailed on a CD/ DVD with files easily readable on any computer.
* Our goal is to use less paper, cut down on mailing/receiving time & make it easier on our judges in another state.
COMPETITION JUDGING
1. Entries will be judged by members of another state Society.
2. Judges reserve the right to transfer an entry to a more appropriate category if they so choose.
3. In each category, the following will be awarded**
a. One first place trophy
b. One second place silver medal
c. One third place bronze medal
**An award may not be given in a category if the judges’ total score is less than 36 of 60 points.
